The Thing - Movie Review

The Thing – Movie Review

Horror fans who are looking for a shot of adrenalin to revitalize their spirits now that October’s monster mazes, haunted hayrides, ghost ships, and harvest festivals are have closed their gates, could do worse than taking in THE THING, before it exists from theatres. Although neither a box office nor a critical powerhouse, the film [...]

Heritage Square Halloween & Mourning Tour 2011: Mini-Review

Heritage Square Halloween & Mourning Tour 2011: Mini-Review

I just wanted to take a moment to offer a brief, belated review of this year’s Halloween & Mourning Tour at the Heritage Square Museum this weekend. Heritage Square, which preserves Victorian mansions built in Los Angeles near the turn of the previous century, has offered this self-guided tour every Halloween for the past eight [...]

Hollywood Gothique's Halloween Haunt Awards 2011

Hollywood Gothique’s Halloween Haunt Awards 2011

Drum roll, please – or should that be a funeral dirge? Whatever soundtrack you choose to play in your mind or on your computer while reading this, it is time to bestow our annual accolades for the Best Los Angeles Halloween Events. As with last year, I will dispense with rigid categories in favor of [...]

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Restless Spirits, Eternal Rest, The Dark Side & Mishap Manor

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Restless Spirits, Eternal Rest, The Dark Side & Mishap Manor

The final installment of our 2011 Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey takes us to a pair of old favorites, both restless and eternal, and also ventures into previously uncharted realms of mishaps and darkness. The wide spectrum of approaches – from shivers to shocks, from simple to sophisticated – is a remarkable testament to the impressive variety [...]

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Mourning Rose Manor and Helizondo Haunt

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Mourning Rose Manor and Helizondo Haunt

After Burbank, Tarzana, and Woodland Hills, the next leg of Hollywood Gothique’s 2011 Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey takes us from Los Angeles all the way to Simi Valley. The little bedroom community seems quiet and safe, but you never know what sort of hidden terror lies just beneath the placid surface – until now…

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: House at Haunted Hill, Haunt with No Name, Fallen Angel Cemetery

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: House at Haunted Hill, Haunt with No Name, Fallen Angel Cemetery

The House at Haunted Hill
The previous installment of our annual Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey took us through two terrifying mazes in Burbank, The Backwoods Maze and Rotten Apple 907’s Space Oddessey. Moving on to Tarzana and Woodland Hills, we encounter a trio of Halloween Yard Haunts that are less interested in shocks and surprise than [...]

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Rotten Apple 907 & Backwoods Maze

Halloween Yard Haunt Odyssey 2011: Rotten Apple 907 & Backwoods Maze

Our exploration of 2011’s Halloween Yard Haunts began last week with our trip to Boney Island (reviewed here). Next, we move on to Burbank for a pair of Amateur Halloween Events that display enough skill and imagination to rank along side professional Halloween Haunted Houses & Hayrides in Los Angeles.
The Backwoods Maze (1912 North Pepper [...]

Wicked Lit 2011: Production A Review

Wicked Lit 2011: Production A Review

Dates: October 21 through November 5
Location: Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery, 2300 N. Marengo Avenue, Altadena, California
Wicked Lit’s innovative productions – based on the works of Poe, Lovecraft, Dickens, etc – fully immerse the audience in different times and locations, creating a unique brand of shuddery entertainment, quite distinct from other Halloween events in Los Angeles.

Ghost Tour at Strathearn Park 2011 Review

Ghost Tour at Strathearn Park 2011 Review

Dates: October 14-16, 21-23, 28-30
The Ghost Tour at Stathearn Park brings to life the history of Simi Valley, told by dead souls from the past. The experience is not intended to be frightening, but it does hit the right mood for Halloween. People interested in history and/or in enjoying Halloween without being assaulted by costumed maniacs, will find this event to be a pleasant and educational diversion.

The Phantom of the Opera (1925): Movie Review

The Phantom of the Opera (1925): Movie Review

Lon Chaney as Erik, the Phantom
This silent film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel is one of the classics in the history of the horror genre, although it actually predates the widespread use of the term “horror film.” With its static camera style and sometimes slow pace, this old-fashioned gothic-mystery-romance about a deformed madman-musician, who haunts [...]

Theatre 68 Haunted House 2011: Review & Video

Theatre 68 Haunted House 2011: Review & Video

Dates: October 14-31
Hours: 8-11pm weeknights & Sundays; 8pm-midnight on Fridays & Saturdays
Theatre 68 doesn’t have the expanse of other Halloween haunts in Los Angeles, but it offers something distinctive that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere: a more personal, intimate variety of horror, with audience and characters engaged up close and personal.

Boney Island 2011: Review & Video

Boney Island 2011: Review & Video

Dates: October 21-31
Hours: 6-9pm Sunday-Thursday; 6-10pm Friday-Saturday
Location: 4602 Morse Avenue Sherman Oaks, CA 91432
After a three-year hiatus, Boney Island is back, and it’s even better than before! The Halloween yard haunt’s skeleton crew has morphed from a carnival into a magic show, but the familiar, whimsical aura still pervades the grounds, making this one of the best Los Angeles Halloween haunts for children.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)

Lon Chaney, Jr.’s Wolf Man may be cinema’s most famous lycanthrope, but there can be little doubt that this 1960 film from Hammer Productions is the best werewolf movie ever made. It features all of the studio’s classic virtues: beautiful sets, effective music, colorful photography, solid scripting, memorable performances, and a muscular directorial approach that [...]

Horror of Dracula (1958)

Horror of Dracula (1958)

This full-blooded vampire film (you should pardon the expression) reinvented the image of Count Dracula for a generation of filmgoers, eschewing cobwebby castles and black-and-white atmosphere in favor of a bold, colorful approach, filled with lovely cinematography and lavish sets that belie the modest budget. The screenplay by Jimmy Sangster jettisons the creepy clichés and [...]

Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest 2011: Review

Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest 2011: Review

Dates: October 7-9, 14-16, 21-23, and 28-31
Six October seasons have passed since last we visited the Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest, in the eldritch year of 2005 (review here). That is vast eons of time in the competitive netherworld of Halloween haunted houses and hayrides, and Six Flags has expanded its Fright Fest with more mazes, scare zones, and shows than ever before; we found this year’s event to be much the same as before in terms of its overall impact, but it is bigger and better than before.

Pirates of Emerson 2011 - Bay Area Haunt Review

Pirates of Emerson 2011 – Bay Area Haunt Review

During a recent trek up north, Hollywood Gothique visited two Halloween haunts in the East Bay area near San Francisco: The Candle Lighters Ghost House (reviewed here) and the Pirates of Emerson. We had been hearing about the later for years, and the Haunt Mistress (whose Haunted Bay website offers news and reviews of Halloween [...]

Delusion: A Haunted Play - Review

Delusion: A Haunted Play – Review

Watch your step – and those hands – as you descend the stairs.
You should go see Delusion, the new Halloween haunted house that just opened in Los Angeles.
No, really. Stop reading this now, and go buy your tickets.
What more do we need to tell you? I mean, you know us, right? Have we ever steered [...]

The Candle Lighters Ghost House 2011: Haunted Hotel - Review & Video

The Candle Lighters Ghost House 2011: Haunted Hotel – Review & Video

Here at Hollywood Gothique, we occasionally receive requests to cover Halloween events that lie outside our usual domain (that is, Los Angeles and the surrounding Southland). This year, we finally took this advice, travelling up north to visit two haunts in the East Bay Area, near San Francisco: “The Candle Lighters Ghost House – Haunted [...]

Ghost Ship 2011 Review

Ghost Ship 2011 Review

Dates: October 14-15, 21-22, 28-29
The Ghost Ship is an enjoyable novelty: a short pleasure cruise with a Value-added Halloween theme. The enjoyment one receives is much as one would expect on any cruise: the refreshing chill of a cool sea breeze on the observation deck; the glittering lights of docks and buoys reflected off the ocean; the relaxed, transitory camaraderie of fellow travelers sharing a deck on a ship sailing over water smooth as glass. The happiest audience will be one that enjoys these regular attractions and appreciates the Halloween elements as a bonus.

Sinister Pointe 2011 Review

Sinister Pointe 2011 Review

The Sinister Pointe Halloween attraction erupted from the grave like a screaming banshee two years ago, scaring Orange Count residents as never before; at least, that’s what we heard, second-hand. In 2008, the haunt proprietor had earned a reputation for an officially licensed SAW maze; that reputation grew with the 2009 debut of Sinister Pointe, [...]

Mini-Reviews: Sinister Pointe and Ghost Ship

Mini-Reviews: Sinister Pointe and Ghost Ship

At Hollywood Gothique, we are all about Halloween in Los Angeles; nevertheless, we do make the trek out to Orange County to partake of the terrors on offer in that fearsome and mysterious land. This week, we checked out Sinister Pointe and Ghost Ship (the later of which, from the makers of the Los Angeles [...]

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride 2011 Review

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride 2011 Review

A female ghoul keeps an eye on the Haunted Hayride.
If  have taken the ride or read the reviews, you know that in a mere two years the L.A. Haunted Hayride has driven to the front of the pack, becoming one of the premiere Halloween events in Los Angeles. To laud the haunt with praises once [...]

Reign of Terror 2011 Review

Reign of Terror 2011 Review

Dates: October 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-31
Reign of Terror continues to house new terrors within its ever expanding walls. The growth from last Halloween to now may not be dramatic, but it is vividly clear to even the most casual haunt-goer. There are more scares than ever before, many of them quite startling.
