It’s become something of an annual tradition at Hollywood Gothique: picking out favorite sexy Halloween costumes for women. And who are we to stand in the way of tradition? So here we go again, with a new list of hot Halloween attire. In the past we preferred costumes with some connection to the origins of the season, but this year we offer simply a random selection of the most eye-catching offerings. We did try to avoid duplicating too many types of costumes seen before, but it seems as if the certain ones are so perennially popular that they cannot be avoided.

Top 10 Playboy Bunny Costumes – and Then Some

The Halloween season is rapidly approaching, and people are planning what to wear when October 31 rolls around. For some reason (as if I can’t imagine), many visitors (or should that read “many men”?) are finding their way to Hollywood Gothique through Internet searches for “Playboy Costumes.” Normally, we like to keep our Halloween traditional (witches, vampires, bats, and all that), but in this case we bow to the old adage that advises you to give costumers what they want. I suspect that most of this Internet browing is the result of wishful thinking that will never see reality (”Wouldn’t it be nice if my wife/girlfrend would wear that to the costume party – or better yet, forget the party and just wear it in the bedroom”), so perusing these pictures is probably the closest that many will come to ever fulfilling this particular fantasy. Thus, as a sort of public service to the eternal optimists, we present our list of Top Ten Playboy Bunny Costumes – and then some runners up and accessories. I know, I know – how many variations can there be on the old Bunny-waitress outfit? Quite a few, it turns out, as you will see by perusing the costumes below.

Sex sells, so it should be no surprise that last year’s post “Good Girls Gone Bad: 13 Sexy Costumes for Women” is one of the most popular ever on this website, and yet I am surprised at what a perennial it is. Part of the point (made in a New York Times article the post referenced) was that women enjoy the annual opportunity to step outside their normal persona and indulge their inner vixen without fear of societal disapproval, because the Halloween season grants a certain carte blanche. Why, then, does this particular post draw viewers year-round? I suspect it’s men fantasizing about what they can get their girlfriends to wear next October, or boys fantasizing about having girlfriends, but whatever the case, with interest in Halloween steadily growing (even though it’s only summer), we have decided to take pity on all those desperately hopeful young men by offering up another collection of 13 Sexy Costumes for Women.

Last year, I tried to stick to what I consider Halloween-appropriate costumes (witches, devils, vampires – or at the very least, characters from fairy tales) while eschewing popular items that have nothing to do with the season’s tradition (no naughty school girls or nurses). This year, I may relax my rules just a bit, for variety’s sake.

Good Girls Gone Bad for Halloween: 13 Sexiest Costumes for Women

The New York Times has posted an article on the rise of risque Halloween costumes for women. The central thesis is that Halloween offers an opportunity for “Good Girls” to dress bad for a day without risking any social consequences. The aritcle quotes a mildly disapproving Dr. Adie Nelson, who wrote an article about gender stereotype embodied in women’s Halloween costumes, but women customers seem unconcerned by charges of sexism.

Rebecca Colby, 28, a library clerk in Milwaukee, said the appeal of sexy costumes lies in escaping the workaday, ho-hum dress code.

“I’m not normally going to wear a corset to go out,” said Ms. Colby, who has masqueraded as a Gothic witch with a low-cut bodice, a minidress-wearing bumblebee, a flapper and, this year, most likely, a “vixen pirate.”

“Even though you’re in a costume when you go out to a party in a bar or something, you still want to look cute and sexy and feminine,” she said.

Indeed, many women think that showing off their bodies “is a mark of independence and security and confidence,” said Pat Gill, the interim director of the Institute of Communications Research and a professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Illinoisat Urbana-Champaign.

This seems as good an excuse as any for us to post a list of our 13 Favorite Sexy Costumes for Women. As usual, we try to remain true to the tradition of the Halloween season. We did not necessarily pick the most revealing or tawdriest attire, instead emphasizing costumes with an element of supernatural horror, Gothic elegance, or at least fairy-tale type fantasy. You will not find sexy school girls or tightly-clad nurses, but you will find velvet vampires, slinky spiders, and red-hot devils. Enjoy!

Annual Costume Concerns are back!

There is some kind of unwritten law that, every year, there must be at least one article lamenting that there are too many sexually suggestive costumes for young girls. Here is this year’s edition, courtesy of CBCNews.ca.

The trend toward skimpier, sexier Halloween costumes for young girls is raising concern among members of a children’s advocacy group in Metro Vancouver.

Stephanie Owen said many costumes being sold to young girls for Halloween degrade women and glamorize the sex trade.

I can’t blame adults for being worried that there children are growing up too fast, and the premature sexualization of children truly is offensive, but Halloween is probably the least offender in this regard – at the very least, it’s no worse than fashions that young girls wear the rest of the year.

But what makes this article interesting is that it does a poor job of distinguishing between costumes for adults and for children, implying that it is nearly impossible to find safe appropriate garb for pre-teens.

Actually, cute costumes for adorable kids are just as popular as ever. (If you don’t believe me, the photo topping this post shows an example of a young adult costume that is not revealing at all; you can find more in the Children’s Costumes of our online store). I think the real problem here is that, once kids pass the age of ten, they start aspiring to act like teenagers – and they start reaching for older costumes, which may indeed not be appropriate for their age.

Exhibit A is the photo that accompanies the article. Ten-year-old Jessica Zhang is shown holding a costume that the caption labels as have a skirt that is “too short for her.” But anyone who actually looks at the image closely can see that she is holding an adult costume.

Instead of expressing concern that this is someone going to lead Jessica to a life on the streets, it would be much simpler if her mother would simply send your to the children’s section of the store.
