The Queen Mary’s annual Halloween event sails into Long Beach. Can it capsize the competition?
When the Queen Mary rechristened its October attraction two years ago, the new Dark Harbor was intended to generate a titanic tidal wave of terror that would eventually rock the boats of rival theme park events, the Knotts Berry Farm Halloween [...]

What will be this year’s Best Los Angeles Halloween Events? For those who like to plan ahead, Hollywood Gothique offers a series of 2012 Halloween Recommendations, beginning with a perusal of Halloween Theme Park Attractions, such as Halloween Horror Nights and Knotts Scary Farm. Which should you seek like Professor Challenger finding the Lost World? Which should you avoid like Dracula shunning sacred ground? To find out, come along with us…if you dare!
The Queen Mary Dark Harbor returns for 2012. This year, the annual Halloween attraction exploits the venerable Queen Mary’s own haunted history, offering a frightful new maze and five new characters based on allegedly documented events. The new maze is Deadrise, in which the captain and the crew of a sunken WWII escort ship emerge from a watery grave to menace the living.

Drum roll, please – or should that be a funeral dirge? Does Dark Harbor 2011 boldly voyage into darkly haunted seas never charted before? Not quite: much is the same as last year, the old barnacles scraped away and replaced with fresh paint, the cabins aired out and redecorated, the crew primed and ready for another cruise into terror. In fact, the best way to describe this year’s Queen Mary Dark Harbor is to switch metaphors from the bounding main to music: Dark Harbor 2011 is like a remastered CD – basically the same music, with perhaps one or two bonus tracks, but with improved clarity of sound that brings out details you might have missed before, making the result seem new.
The venerable Queen Mary has been in the spooky seasonal business for long enough to make it one of the most popular Halloween events in Los Angeles, and yet is reputation among fans has often placed it in the “also ran” category behind the big theme park attractions Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and the Knotts Berry Farm Halloween Haunt. In this interview, the crustaceous crew of the Queen Mary Dark Harbor muse over their long-term plans for sailing full-steam ahead and into the future, hopefully overtaking the competition in the process.

The Queen Mary Dark Harbor sees the majestic ocean-liner-turned-hotel revamping its Halloween presentation for 2010, with the long-term goal of challenging the Knotts Berry Farm Halloween Haunt and Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood – a daunting task approximately equivalent to taking on both Dracula and Frankenstein in a tag-team wrestling match.
