*AMATEUR YARD HAUNTS
DATES: October 29-31 HOURS: sundown 6:30pm-11pm (weather permitting) ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE FEATURES: In its 18th year, this is one of the must-see amateur haunts in Los Angeles. Basically, it's a circular driveway loaded with elaborate mechanical effects (moving tombstones, creakying coffins, floating lamps, etc). It's not too scary for little kids (no gore, no one jumping out to scare you), but the elaborate decorations are extremely atmospheric and impressive.

DATES: October 28-31 HOURS: 7:00pm-midnight (weather permitting). ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE (donations accepted) FEATURES: More spooky than scary, this amatuer haunt is an excellent place to bring young trick-or-treaters who might be scared by professional haunted mazes. No one jumps out to scare you. Basically, it's a front yard filled with mechanical effects (moving gravestones) and projected images (ghosts rising from the ground), with some wonderfully eerie music and sound effects. You walk down the driveway, look into the house (where ghostly musicians appear and disappear at their instruments), get a glimpse into the backyard (a fog shrouded cemetery), and exit down a walkway (past a monk delivering in invocation over a well filled with strange light). You could go through the whole thing in a few minutes, but you would not see everything. In a way, it's lucky that the place is usually crowded, forcing you to stand and wait, so that you see many things you would have missed. HISTORY: This amateur neighborhood haunt is in its thirty-second year, and people keep coming back -- because it's the best amateur haunt in the Los Angeles Area. Each year, it just gets bigger and better.
PREVIEW: We took a walk through the Haunting Grounds on Thursday, a sort of unofficial "preview" night (heavy rains prevented the proprietors from getting everything fully ready on time). Read about what we saw by clicking here.
DATES: October 7-10, 14-17, 21-31 HOURS: 7:00pm-10:00pm weeknights and Sundays; 7:00pm-midnight Fridays, Saturdays, and Thursday the 28th and Sunday the 31st. ADMISSION: $12. PARKING: FREE BARGAINS: $2 off with this coupon. FEATURES: Like Spooky House, this stand-alone haunted attraction is located in a permanent facility. This allows for year-round planning and for greater detailing of sets, some located inside, some outdoors. DRAWBACKS: Located in Ontario (behind the Orange curtain), this haunt is a bit out of the way for most Angelenos, but those who have been insist that it's worth the drive. HISTORY: According to the haunt's website, the root's from the vineyard's gravpevines have grown down into a memorial cemetery, built where some workers were killed in a train crash decades ago. "News reports" posted on the webiste claim that a mysteirous sink hole has opened up this year, during attempts to relocate the graves, and now mysteirous things are happening....
