BONEY ISLAND
4602 Morse Avenue 2007 DATES: October 19 through 31, 2007 NOTE: 2007 marks the 10th anniversary of the haunt - and the last year it will be in operation. Do not miss this final opportunity! HISTORY: This unique yard haunt has been entertaining San Fernando Valley trick-or-treaters since the 1990s. The proprietor is Rick Polizzi, aproducer of THE SIMPSONS. FEATURES: Billing itself as the "world's only skeleton carnival," this haunt is a Halloween version of a Coney Island-type entertainment attraction -- populated entirely by skeletons! The special mechanical effects (mostly wires pulled by motors) are proudly low-tech, but that detracts from the enterainment value not one boney little bit. Laugh as the skeletons fish in the "Trick or Trout" booth! Thrill as they swing clubs at flapping flying mammals in the "Batting Cage"! Gag at the "Rotten Candy" machine filled with spiders! BOTTOM LINE: There is very little that is actually spooky here (nor does it try to be). The colors and carnival music are all calculated for to create fun, almost Tim Burton-esque atmosphere, making this the perfect place to bring young children who might be intimidated by more adult-type haunts. That's not to say the appeal is solely to children -- the outrageously goofy displays are guaranteed laugh-providers for adults, too. REVIEWS: You can read our account of a trip to Boney Island in our "Haunted House Odyssey 2005," which also includes trips to the Haunted Myers Estate and Jackson Manor. We make a return trip to review the 10th and final year in 2007. OTHER INFORMATION: If you have trouble accessing Boney Island's Official Website, check out their page on the Hallowed Haunting Grounds website: http://www.hauntinggrounds.org/polizzi/rpeh.htm VIDEO: Enjoy our video visit to 10th and final year of Boney Island, including an interview with Rick Polizzi. Also included is the second installment of our four-part "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005," which features some Boney Island along with several other amateur haunts. 10800 Henderson Road 2007 DATES: October 26-27 FEATURES: Although this is not a yard haunt and you do have to pay to get in, we have listed it on our "Amateur Haunts" page because it is a high school effort, designed mostly to provide fun for the local kids, while bringing in some money and food donations The proprietors promise "a small but cool maze with a mild scare factor"; although the budget is small a few Hollywood FX professionals do help out. 414 Rose Avenue 2007 DATES & HOURS: October 31 from 6:30pm until...? INFORMATION: The haunt is described as an "Professional outdoor haunted Halloween environement" that may "be too scary for very young children.

FRIGHT GALLERY
454 South Lamer Street NOTE: The Fright Gallery did not put on a show during 2006 or 2007. We have heard (though not confirmed) that the haunt was shut down due to neighbor complaints. ADMISSION & PARKING: Free (donations accepted) HISTORY: The Fright Gallery describes itself as a "terrifyingly hilarious experience in suburban lawn art." The yard haunt began back in 1980 as "The Horror House"; it has gone through several expansions and permutations since then, morphing into an annual Halloween-themed musical-comedy production, with titles like "Shipwreck Shores," "Boney Island," "Scream Acres," and the "Pumpkin Patch." In 2003 they even tried their hand at a professional walk-through maze called "Experiment in Terror," which was quite good (basically, a scripted tour of a haunted house, with each room featuring a different mechanical special effect, such as a semi-transparent ghost that appeared from a bathtub and "slimed" the audience). FEATURES: The Fright Gallery put on a demented --and amazingly elaborate -- Broadway-style musical in front of a haunted house facade, complete with stage lighting and moving set pieces. MORE INFO: The show took place on the front lawn of a house in a residential area, which can become quite congested on busy nights. The Fright Gallery recommended parking a block away and walking over. REVIEW: Read our review of Fright Gallery's 2005 presentation, "Twisted," here. VIDEO: Check out the Fright Gallery's musical rendition of "Twisted" in the third segment of our four-part "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005." Reseda, CA 91335 NOTE: This was apparentlya one-shot deal, when some ambitious haunters took advantage of a rare opportunity: being asked to house sit for a friend. With an empty house at their disposal, they turned it into an excellent walk-through haunt. FEATURES: This completely amateur effort was one of the best of its kind in Los Angeles in 2004, with seven rooms of bone-chilling fear that promised to "scare the yell out of you," including a 3D maze. Unfortunately, the haunt decided to skip 2005 and 2006, because it was unable to secure a suitable location. With no news for 2007, it seems this was a one-shot wonder. ALSO OF NOTE: Although free, the haunt did take donations. In 2004, all proceed went to benefit APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles). Read about our 2004 Halloween Haunted House Odessey (including a trip to Frightmare, Grimmstone, Hallowed Haunting Grounds, Witch's Castle, and other amateur haunts). 2 Stagecoach Drive DATES & HOURS: Every October 31, from dusk until trick-or-treaters stop coming. ADMISSION & PARKING: Free BACKGROUND: The proprietor of this amateur effort used to work at Knott's Scary Farm. The yard haunt began in 1997 and moved to its current location five years later. DESCRIPTION: This yard haunt features not only a yard decorated as a cemetery but also a walk-through maze that is very professionlly done. OTHER INFO: The haunt's official website offers helpful how-to hints for other haunters. Learn ho to make mazes, coffins, etheral ghosts, and more. REVIEW: Read about our visit to the haunt in our Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2007, Part 2. 5202 Zoo Drive 2007 DATES & HOURS: 7:00pm to 10:00pm, October 10-21, 26 through 31 INFORMATION: The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum has been presenting their "Ghost Train" since 2001. Run by train enthusiasts, the non-profit corporation runs their 71/2-inch gauge model trains free of charge every sunday. For Halloween, the path is decorated with a series elaborately spooky scenes. 6706 Blewett Avenue DATES & HOURS: Alas, no more! ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE NOTE: The official website states that, after 20 years of haunting, 2006 was Grimmstone's final year. We can only hope that some day it opens its gates again for Halloween. FEATURES:This is one of the must-see amateur haunts in Los Angeles. Basically, it's a circular driveway loaded with elaborate mechanical effects (moving tombstones, creaking coffins, a talking skeleton, a floating ghost, etc). It's not too scary for little kids (no gore, no one jumping out to scare you), but the elaborate decorations are extremely atmospheric and impressive. VIDEO INTERVIEW: Watch "A Visit to Grimmstone Cemetery," featuring an interview with proprietor Noah Korda. "GRIMMSTONE GHOSTWALK" VIDEO: Take a walk through the Grimmstone Cemetery. Who is the mysterious, shrouded blonde figure in front of the camera? Could it be the mournful ghost heard calling for her lost baby? Watch it by clicking here. DATES & HOURS: Alas, no more! ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE (donations accepted) PLEASE NOTE: The Hallowed Haunting Grounds claims that 2005 was its "Final Manifestation." We wish them well in their future endeavors, but what will we do without them during Halloweens to come? FEATURES: More spooky than scary, this amatuer haunt is an excellent place to bring young trick-or-treaters who might be scared by professional haunted mazes. No one jumps out to scare you. Basically, it's a front yard filled with mechanical effects (moving gravestones) and projected images (ghosts rising from the ground), with some wonderfully eerie music and sound effects. You walk down the driveway, look into the house (where ghostly musicians appear and disappear at their instruments), get a glimpse into the backyard (a fog shrouded cemetery), and exit down a walkway (past a monk delivering in invocation over a well filled with strange light). You could go through the whole thing in a few minutes, but you would not see everything. In a way, it's lucky that the place is usually crowded, forcing you to stand and wait, so that you see many things you would have missed. HISTORY: This amateur neighborhood haunt lasted until its thirty-third year, and people kept coming back -- because it was the best amateur haunt in the Los Angeles Area. Each year, it just grew bigger and better. VIDEO: Check out the Final Manifestation of the Hallowed Haunting Grounds in the final segment of our four-part "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005." Katherine Avenue, between Riverside Dr. and Huston St. DATES & HOURS: Usually, Halloween night, from dusk till approximately 9:00pm ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE INFORMATION: This small yard haunt is part of an effort to show support for the local neighborhood watch program. It is not as elaborate as some efforts, but it is worth seeing if you are in the area, especially if you have kids. 216 West 23rd Street INFORMATION: Apparently this kid-friendly haunt (featuring an animated mad doctor, a talking head, sound fx, fog, lights) was a one-shot deal presented by DNK Media (a computer repair company), whose website currently has no information regarding a possible repeat performance. Rotten Apple 907 2007 DATES: October 27, 28, HOURS: 7:00pm to 10:00pm HISTORY: This amateur haunt, put on by "Rotten Apple Studios," has been in operation since 1990. It's free to trick-or-treaters, but they do accept donations to benefit charities (victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 2006, Burbank Arts Foundation in 2007). FEATURES: More than a yard decorated with tombstones and ghouls (although there is plenty of that), this haunt features an extensive walk-through maze that takes you through several separate rooms. Most of the props are familiar store-bourght items, but they are used to wonderful effect. There are some good scares and some clever laughs. For example 2005's haunt (which was called "Graveyyard 907") featured a zombie endlessly walking on a treadmill while moaning for "Brains! Brains" (obviously inspired by Dan O'Bannon's 1985 film RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD). OTHER INFORMATION: For 2007, Rotten Apple Studios presents "Malice in Wonderland," a demented tribute to Lewis Carroll. REVIEWS: Read about our trip to 2005's Graveyard 907 in our "Haunted House Odyssey 2005." Read our review of 2007's Malice in Wonderland here. VIDEO: Check out the brief videoclip of a walk through Graveyard 907's haunted maze, in part one of our four-part "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005." Altadena Sheriff's Station DATES & HOURS: October 31 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm DONATION: minimum $2.00 INFORMATION: The Altadena Sheriff's Station has been presenting a 3D haunt since 1997. Not recommended for children under five. Westchester Park 2007 DATES & HOURS: 7:30 to 11:30pm on October 19-20, 26-27 & 31 ADMISSION: $5.00 INFORMATION: Directed by the "Staff of Westchester," this 20-year-old haunt claims to be the "best in Los Angeles." 5112 Maricopa Street DATES & HOURS: Closed for 2007, due to time constraints. ADMISSION & PARKING: ALWAYS FREE INFORMATION: In operation since 1997, the Haunted Shack has grown into a single effects-filled, 1500-square-foot maze that takes 3-4 minutes to walk through. The look of the maze changes from year to year, depending on the theme (2005 was killer klowns, for example). 2007 DATES: October 28 (preview night), October 29-31 HOURS: Monday & Tuesday - 7:00pm to 10:00pm; Halloween - dusk to 11:00pm ADMISSION & PARKING: ALWAYS FREE INFORMATION: In operation for since 1996, this impressive haunt is located in a wide front yard of a quiet, dark residential area with lots of shrubbery and trees that block the light and lend an extra touch of authentic atmosphere. The lighting scheme is definitely low-key, and you will have a hard time taking photographs even with your night vision digital cameras, but the effect is wonderfully creepy in an old-fashioned Gothic way. The decor consists of a stone gate, tombstones, ghosts floating from trees, fog, and shrouded figures. The tableau are mostly static, but there is a nice moving candle that seems to hover in the air above a stone sarcophagus. Even more impressive is the large upright crypt with a floating spirit inside. Overall, this has an sinister feel, with the layout of the corner house's front yard nicely utilized to create the sense that you are approaching a dark and dreadful place (even though the proprietors turn out to be quite nice). FUN FACTS: The proprieters insist they would like to come up with a name for their haunt, so if you have any good ideas, feel free to e-mail them. REVIEW: Read about our trip to The Haunt in our 2006 Halloween Odyssey. VIDEO: Check out our video interview with the Haunt's proprietors... 2719 Frankel Street 2007 DATES & HOURS: October 27 & 31, from 6:00pm until 10:00pm ADMISSION: Free! INFORMATION: This amateur haunt launched a new, themed maze in 2007, called "Nightmares." Although free, the haunt accepted donations for the victims of the California wildfires. 4400 Saltillo Streeet 2007 DATES: Saturday, October 27 through Wednesday, October 31 HOURS: Shows at 20-minute intervals from 7:00pm utnil 10:00pm on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday; shows start from 7:00pm until 11:40pm on Saturday and on Halloween Night. ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE 2007 INFORMATION: For this year, the House on Haunted Hill promises to take a quantuum leap forward, offering a 20-minute scripted show (written by playwright Ed Valentine), complete with a musical score by Emmy-nominated Christopher Hoag. Other entertainment industry professionals have chipped in, and event Tim Doggett (Hallowed Haunting Grounds) and Nathan Hamilton (Turbidite Manor) have lent a hand, in an effort to create something truly spectacular. NOTE: You do not have to arrive at the exact start time in order to see the haunt, but it probably will help. BACKGROUND: Since the demise of the late, lamented Hallowed Haunting Grounds, this haunt takes the crown for the best amateur Halloween attraction in the Los Angeles area. In operation since 1999, the two-story house is loaded with black-lit drapes fluttering in the wind, with skeletal figures and floating ghosts peeking out the windows. There is a skeleton on the porch and a phantom bride around the corner toward the back. A tombstone in front of the main entrance slides back and forth as something tries to get out. But what's really impressive is the use of the yard space, which stretches up the hill to the back of the house. You'll see two childish skeletons on a teeter-totter, singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider." A bust of Beethoven opens and closes its eyes. Another skeleton swings above a whistling well. Another statue head comes to life and speaks an invocation that rouses the spirits. Farther back, you can see a ghost on the hill, accompanied by phantom shadows flitting across the ground. And the silhouette of some figure with an ax chops...chops...chops away at something unseen. NOTE: This house really is on a hill - on a twisting sidestreet that is hard to spot in the dark. Please note the directions: from the 101 Freeway, take Canoga Avenue south; pass Dumetz, pass the golf course, and turn left onto Saltillo Street. You will glimpse the spooky lights up the road, near a bend. Just keep your eyes peeled and try not to miss the sign for the cross street in the dark. REVIEWS: This listing is derived from our 2006 Halloween Haunt Odyssey, which also included visits to the Pirate Cave and the Haunt with No Name. We review the 2007 presenation here. VIDEO: Check out Hollywood Gothique's video visit to the 2006 incarnation of House at Haunted Hill. 1008 Euclid Street 2007 DATES: October 30 & 31 HOURS: 7:00pm until 11:00pm) ADMISSION: FREE INFORMATION: This Halloween Haunt is put on by Eric Maurin, a professional magician, and Rick Ouwerkerk, an aerospace engineer. It comes highly recommended by the folks who used to run Hallowed Haunting Grounds. Mr. Maurin promises "some new additions and upgrades" for 2007. REVIEWS: Read an account of spooky visit to the haunt's 2007 presentation. 22506 N. Myers Street 2007 DATES & HOURS: October 30-31, dusk till 10:00pm ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE HISTORY: Jackson Manor began circa 2002 as a yard haunt, with tombstones and figures of familiar monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman haunting the lawn, and an alien autopsy laboratory set up in the drive-way. By 2005, it had grown to feature its very own walk-through maze, with pulse-pounding music, claustrophobic corridors, a couple simple mechanical effects (e.g., a rotted body popping out of a can of toxic waste), and several ghouls lurking in the shadows. FEATURES: The yard haunt aspect of Jackson Manor is truly impressive, with a professional looking tomb dominating the lawn; its doors open and close automatically, unveiling spinning, hypnotic lights within. The maze is fun and scary, although the props and settings are not as elaborate as those in Nightmare Junction or Graveyard 907. After the maze, you can indulge in the archaic Halloween tradition known as "trick-or-treating," picking up some candy at the front door -- not only is the porch elaborately decorated, but so is the interior of the house, as well. 2007 NEWS: In August, the Jackson Manor blog posted preliminary design for their 2007 haunt. Click here. Unfortunately, the latest info on their website indicates that there will be no walk-through maze this year. REVIEWS: Check out our reaction to Jackson Manor in our "Haunted House Odyssey 2005." WEBSITE INFO: Navigation on the Manor's website is difficult. There is no "Home" button, so once you go to other pages, the only way to return is to use the Back button on your Internet browser. The website includes a blog, but there is no navigation button for it; your reach it by clicking on the logo at the top of the website. VIDEO: Take a walk through Jackson Manor's 2005 maze in the second segment of our "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005." 1785 E. Orange Grove Boulevard DATES & HOURS: Starts at dusk on October 31 of odd-numbered years. DESCRIPTION: an expansive yard loaded with tombstones and decorative lights. A few sound effects enhance the cemetery feel, but the tone is mostly jokey (with gravestone markers for Bush and Michael Bolton). Passing through an arch, you take the long walk toward the house, accompanied by a silent figure in a gas mask. The front of the house is even more elaborately decorated with bones, an angle skeleton, and wafts of fog. The costumes proprietors guard the door, scaring those who look strong enough to take it but receiving the children amiably enough. Before you take your candy and leave, don't forget to glance through the front door: the inside of the house is just as haunted as the outside, including some lovely miniature pieces above the fireplace mantle. 2220 Chandler Blvd NOTE: It looks as if this haunt has retired. No confirmation from the owners, but during a recent scouting trip (to check out progress of various haunts in the area) there was no sign of construction, props, or any kind of preparations for Halloween. ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE FEATURES: This residential yard haunt, situated on a sidestreet intersection in a quiet neighborhood, is made up to look like a torture chamber, complete with dismembered bodies strung up above the fence that surrounds the property, plus various torture racks and other menacing devices. The grounds are patrolled by a hooded executioner, who pulls a cord to drop the guillotine on a dummy victim. Enterting the main gate leads you into a short, temporary maze structure, with a couple of gory scenes inside. A local attraction, this extravagant amateur effort can be very busy on Halloween night, unless you arrive very early. Although gruesome, the all tone is somewhat over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek, so this is proabably okay for all except the very youngest kids. VIDEO: A tour of the executioner's chamber is included in the second segment of our "Halloween Haunt Odyssey 2005," which you can access under the Jackson Manor listing above. 7919 Lasaine Avenue 2007 DATES & HOURS: Halloween Night, dusk till 10:00pm ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE INFORMATION: The Pirate Cave first materialized in 2003. As the name implies, this one features a painted flat suggesting a pirate ship, along with dancing fireflies and a murky harbor in the front yard. Next to this, a giant skull with flaming eyes sits atop the entrance to a walk-through maze representing the pirate's cave. Inside, you'll see a floating spirit and a ghoul or two lurking in the shadows, before you reach the "treasure" buried within - a cask of candy, naturally enough. With an emphasize on cool decor instead of intense scares, this is a fun little walk-through haunt - good enough for adults, safe enough for children - whose pirate theme and home-made props distinguish it from several other amateur Halloween efforts. REVIEW: We reviewed the Pirate Cave in our 2006 Halloween Odyssey. VIDEO: See the Pirate Cave and two other Northridge yard haunts. 2192 Rusticpark Court 2007 DATES: October 27-28, 30-31 HOURS: 7:00pm to 10:00pm ADMISSION: FREE - Donations appreciated INFORMATION: This haunt claims to be appropriate for all ages. It features skeletons, hanging bodies, zombie figures, lightening, and fog. It won the 2006 HauntX Best Home Haunt Award. 5016 W. 118th St 2007 DATES: October 30-31, possibly October 27 & 28 HOURS: 7:00pm till 11:00pm ADMISSION: $2 INFORMATION: A gruesome gorefest put on by some Hollywood professionals, this one promises to scare you silly with intestines, chainsaws, and other bloody horror not seen in your average spooky yard haunt. NOTE: The listing for this haunt at HauntedHouseOnline.Com is more useful than the MySpace page, in terms of providing up-to-date info on dates and times. La Palma Park Recreation Center DATES & HOURS: October 27, 12pm to 8pm, October 28, 30-31, 6pm to 10pm ADMISSION & PARKING: $5 donation to benefit the Loara Band Boosters INFORMATION: This long-running haunt (since 1997) is open to all ages, but the proprieters recommend that parents use discretion and accompany any child under the age of 12. This year's theme is "Psychosis." NOTE: This haunt changed location from a private home to the La Palma Recreation Center in 2007. No word on whether the new location is permanent. Formerly the Van Noord Street Haunted House 2007 DATES: October 31 HOURS: usually from dusk till 9:30/10:00pm ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE. However, the haunt has in the past accepted charitable donations (for Make-a-Wish Foundation in 2006, for example). FEATURES: At their previous location on Van Noord Street, this amateur haunted house (put on by some genuine Halloween enthusiasts) featured a front yard decorated as a pet cemetery and a short, walk-through tunnel with some nice black-light decorations and a brief, surprise scare at the end. Since then, they have moved to their current location, expanded their pet cemetery, and added an electric chair and a haunted foyer with a dead butler to guide guests through a 42-foot walk-through maze. NEWS FOR 2007: Due to time constraints, the haunt will not offer their walk through maze. They do promise "a large display with a few surprises to scare you." 4218 Shadyglade Avenue DATES & HOURS: October 30 (preview) from 6:00pm till 10:00pm and October 31 (full show with walk-through to see the witch) from 6:00pm untill...? ADMISSION & PARKING: FREE FEATURES: The self-proclaimed "epicenter of Halloween" is a non-commercial yard haunt, featuring spooky effects and decorations suitable for all ages (although children under eight should probably be accompanied by a parent). The show is entirely outdoors with no steps or mazes, just lots of props and a scary witch handing out candy (on Halloween Night only, not the preview night).
