Description: The penultimate entry in the Harry Potter film series opens nationwide; advance screenings begin just after Thursday midnight (technically Friday morning.) The film will be available in standard engagements and in IMAX 3-D. Eying the approaching demise of their profitable franchise, Warner Brother has divided the final Harry Potter book into two films. Presumably this is the first time in cinematic history that the 7th installment in a franchise carried the designation “Part 1.” The plot: As Harry races against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, he uncovers the existence of three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows.

Description: The Nuart Theatre presents a one-week run of this hard-to-find Japanese horror classic, writer-director Kaneto Shindo’s follow-up to his wonderfully creepy ONIBABA (”Demon Woman,” 1964). I know KURONEKO (”The Black Cat,” 1968) by reputation only, but that reputation is a strong one; by all accounts this is one of the great incarnations of a popular trope in Japanese horror: the ghost cat (i.e., female spirits of murder victims who return in feline form to extract revenge). This film has never been available on Region 1 DVD, so this will be the first opportunity that many Los Angeles residents have had to see the film.
