The Cat and the Canary & Son of Frankenstein at Hammer Museum

The Cat and the Canary (1939)

Bob Hope in THE CAT AND THE CANARY

As part of their series “1939 Redux: Digging Deeper into Hollywood’s Greatest Year,” the UCLA Film & Television Archive presents this double bill of classic scary films. THE OLD DARK HOUSE is a classic combo of thrills and comedy, with Bob Hope wise-cracking his way through the prototypical tale of heirs gathered in an isolated setting where strange things happen. SON OF FRANKENSTEIN is the third in Universal Studios’ classic series; it’s an all-star affair with Basil Rathbone in the title role, Bela Lugosi as the sinister Ygor, and Boris Karloff reprising his role as the Monster.

Just a note: THE CAT AND THE CANARY is currently unavailable on Region 1 DVD, making this rare opportunity to see it on the big screen even more important. Even if you are not a Bob Hope fan, you will get a kick out of the film.
