Things to Come & Art Deco Lecture

The American Cinematheque presents a lecture by Walter Nelson, titled “Dr. Zarkov, Ask the Robot to Fetch My Zeppelin: Art Deco Era Imagines the Future.” This will be followed by a perfect example of the lecture’s subject, the 1936 science fiction epic THINGS TO COME, scripted by H. G. Wells. This is one of the earliest examples of science fiction cinema, an epic look at 100 years of progress from contemporary times into the future. Conventional narrative structure overturned as the film moves through different time periods (somewhat foreshadowing 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY), but continuing is achieved through the re-casting of the same actors in different roles. The special effects may no longer be convincing, but they are impressive in their breadth and scale.

Audience members are encouraged to attend in appropriately futuristic costumes.
